THESE 6 DESTINATIONS ARE THE NEW “It” Places To Go

Be the first to hit these destinations before they explode in popularity.

By Leslie K. Hughes

The people who went to Tulum 10 years ago have probably (and rightfully so) bragged about how they went to Tulum “before it was cool.” They went there before it was overcommercialized; before it became everyone’s IG profile picture. And as much as the braggadocious may seem annoying, it may be because we secretly wish we were them. Finding the new hot spot – whether it’s a city to visit or a new restaurant to try – comes with pride.

That’s why we are going to let you in on a little secret – a few secrets, actually. Though we can’t predict the future, we do think these under-the-radar places will be smoking hot in the next few years, and we want you to be able to brag about going there “before it was cool.”

So, read on for the next “it” places to visit.

1. AlUla, Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia just started issuing tourist visas two years ago, which makes this part of the world mostly undiscovered by tourists, especially Americans. And the magical city of AlUla just opened its doors to visitors in October of 2020, so you can be amongst one of the first to explore this oasis. AlUla packs a lot of history but also has some modern-day adventures to embark on as well.

2. Holbox, Mexico

This island off the coast of Cancun has no cars, no paved roads, and mile after mile of undeveloped beaches – a rare thing to find in Mexico. We predict Holbox will reach the popularity of Tulum in the next few years, so be sure you visit soon for an authentic experience. Head to the waters to get a look at the magnificent whale sharks, and when back on land, enjoy the street art and authentic Mexican cuisine.

3. Ponta Delgada, Azores

Nearly 900 miles off the coast of Portugal, the capital city of the famous archipelago is not to be missed. It offers an active volcano, Furnas that has natural hot springs as well as the nature reserve Lagoa do Fogo, and Sete Cidades National Park where you will find stunning crater lakes. In addition to that, the shops and cafes are delicious, in true Portuguese style. If you have time, visit a pineapple plantation or at the very least enjoy some of the pineapples from the area.

4. Menorca, Spain

When it comes to Spain’s Balearic Islands, Mallorca gets the spotlight, and we are okay with that. Mallorca is a place you should visit at some point in your life, but if you’re all about that quiet beach life, you should also consider its less-popular sister island, Menorca. There are nearly 150 miles of coastline with hidden coves and volcanic scenery to complement.

5. Sumba Island, Indonesia

Imagine Bali 20 years ago and that’s Sumba Island. This spot is twice the size of Bali but has just a fraction of the population, making it the ideal place for adventure. You can get into some snorkeling and world-class surfing here while also soaking up some of the luxury life at the resorts. Sumba Island is referred to as a “lost” world, and you will love getting lost here.

6. Tasmania, Australia

If you’re looking to go “down under,” check out Tasmania. This island off the coast of Australia’s mainland is a name that is familiar, but its experiences are not. Come here if you love yourself some rugged wilderness adventure. Come if you love remote white sand beaches and mountains. But also come here if you love indulging in top-notch culinary creations. You may even be lucky enough to see some Tasmanian devils.
